Integrated Management Student Fellowship helps students make real-world impact

Published: 9 April 2026

Young people care about the world that they live in and students at Desautels don't just sit back when they're troubled by what they see, they want to take responsibility, Sabine Dhir told CBC Television News. The Integrated Management Student Fellowship (IMSF) program helps them do just that. An experiential leadership development opportunity offered through the BCom program, the IMSF it is designed for undergraduate students seeking to create impact in the real world.

"IMSF is tied to the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, and it gives students the opportunity to fuel their learning by focusing on things they care about," said Dhir, an Associate Professor (Professional) of Strategy & Organization who serves as the Director of IMSF.  Dhir gave the example of one student initiative that repurposed unused soap from hotels, sterilizing it and providing it to people who are unhoused. IMSF is a Desautels initiative, but it is open to students from across the university.

"We want people to leave IMSF with the ability to work with people who have different sets of skills in a multidisciplinary and collaborative way," Dhir added.  "We want a sustainability student, a psychology student and an engineer to be able to work together to solve some of the very challenging problems that we face."
