T his capacity for compositionality has been at the heart of the longstandin g debate between neural networks and symbolic models of cognition\, with s ome arguing that innate symbolic algorithms are needed to explain this cap ability. In this talk\, I will discuss recent work investigating the learn ed mechanisms that support cognitive processing in large language models a nd vision language models and illustrate how these mechanisms implement an emergent form of symbol processing\, suggesting a surprising resolution t o this longstanding debate. I will also discuss the prospect for extending these studies to investigate the computational basis of symbolic musical cognition.\n\nWhen: February 18th\, 2026\, from 3:00-4:30 p.m.\, followed by a cocktail\n Where: Université de Montréal\, Pavillon Marie-Victorin\, R oom D-427\n\nDetails here and registration here.\n DTSTART:20260218T200000Z DTEND:20260218T213000Z LOCATION:CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H2V 2T2\, Université de Montréal\, Pavillon M arie-Victorin\, Room D-427 SUMMARY:BRAMS-CRBLM Lecture Series - Taylor Webb URL:/brain-language-music/channels/event/brams-crblm-l ecture-series-taylor-webb-371880 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
