BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING SEMINAR

Thursday, November 25, 2010 10:00to11:30
Raymond Building 21111 Lakeshore Road, St Anne de Bellevue, QC, H9X 3V9, CA

Item 1: Seminar by Simone Bourke
Demonstration of Hydrologic Equipment

A soil water balance is a comprehensive way of understanding and investigating the water dynamics in the soil profile. It involves quantifying all water inputs and outputs in a closed system. Several hydrologic devices were used to determine the components of the soil water balance in a field-scale, artificially-drained, monocropped corn site in Saint Emmanuel,... Quebec. Three of these devices will be described, along with preliminary results obtained so far for the balance.

Simone was born in Sydney, Australia but moved to Quebec at a very young age. She completed her undergraduate degree in Bioresource Engineering and is currently pursuing her MSc in Bioresource Engineering as well. She enjoys all things outdoors and can鈥檛 wait for the snow to arrive so she can get on the mountain!

Item 2: Seminar by Ley眉ze Kozano臒lu
Memorial Reefs

Memorials serve as a means of coping with the loss of a loved one by making the statement that the person will never be forgotten. Traditional techniques range from gravestones to statues. But what about coral reefs? Ley眉ze is going to enlighten the audience on a new approach to making that memory last 鈥渇orever鈥.

Ley眉ze Kozano臒lue is from Adana, a major city in Turkey on the Mediterrenean coast. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a double major in Finance and Economics and then worked for the Citigroup in Istanbul as a wealth manager for 2 years. Last year she completed a graduate certificate in Green Business Management and currently she is enrolled in the MSc in the Integrated Water Resources Management program.

Item 3: Seminar by Pansa Liplap
Effects of Hyperbaric Treatment on Respiration Rates

Quality attributes and storage life of fruits and vegetables after harvest have been a worldwide concern for many years. One important aspect is the rate of respiration. Today there are many methods that are used to reduce the respiration ratesso as to improve the postharvest life and quality of fresh fruits and vegetables. One emerging method of respiration rate control is called 鈥淗yperbaric Treatment鈥.

Pansa is from Thailand. He completed his BEng and MEng in agricultural and food engineering. After a few years of work, he obtained a scholarship to pursue PhD studies in the Department of Bioresource Engineering at 海角社区.

Item 4: Seminar by Juan Pablo Reig
Living Shorelines

The use of living shorelines is an alternative to traditional shoreline stabilization methods. Overall, the aim is to mimic the natural coastal profile, not only stabilizing the shoreline, but also re-creating the habitat and the natural buffer historically found along them.

Juan Pablo grew up in Spain, where he graduated from the University of Navarra with a BS in environmental and agricultural biology. After having worked for four years as an ecological restoration project manager in the US and Latin America, he went back to school and is now a graduate student in the IWRM program.

Item 5: Seminar by Shrikalaa Kannan
Eastern Mysticism and Quantum Physics

The possible link between eastern philosophy and quantum physics has been explored in a number of recent articles. This has resulted in a variety of responses from the academic community, with some members arguing for and some against such a relationship. The idea behind this presentation is to examine the relationship between the quantum physics and eastern mysticism by discussing specific examples of parallelism between these two spheres.

Shrikalaa was born in India where she completed a B. Tech in Biotechnology from the PSG College of Technology in Tamil Nadu. She is currently in her first year as an MSc candidate under the supervision of Dr. Raghavan.
