Scoping before coding: �� MMA students tackle AI for social impact

The inaugural Scope AI Thon challenged ��’s Master of Management in Analytics students to design strategic AI roadmaps, not code, addressing complex social issues for Centraide of Greater Montreal.

Over two sessions in November, teams explored ethical data use, feasibility and bias while working on problems such as digital inclusion and access to community services.

Celebrating student leadership and community impact with the �� Desautels EDI Award of Excellence

In 2023 Desautels’s EDI Initiative launched the �� EDI Award of Excellence to recognize incoming students whose leadership, community engagement and commitment to equity and inclusion set them apart. The first recipient, Aïsha Nsiempba (BCom’26), was recognized for her mentorship, community involvement and work with the Branches Pick Your Path (PYP) program for Black youth.

Highlights from Indigenous Awareness Weeks 2025 at Desautels

During ��'s 2025 Indigenous Awareness Weeks in September, Desautels hosted two events on reconciliation literacy and the role of business in supporting economic empowerment for indigenous communities. Dr Niigaan Sinclair, Anishinaabe writer, columnist, and Professor of Native Studies at the University of Manitoba joined Dr. Veldon Coburn for a conversation on progress since the Trush and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report.

Professional money managers can make mistakes with their money too

Not necessarily, says Patrick Augustin, Associate Professor of Finance at �� Desautels. “There can be a correlation, but also not,” says Augustin. “It’s very difficult to beat the market, on average. We see people doing it, but it raises the question of is it luck, or is it skill? That being said, we can always limit mistakes.

It was a blow to the tech giant to lose Chowdhury, who is credited with playing a key role in the design of the iPhone Air. When firms become too reliant on a few star employees, they take on risk, Prof. Karl Moore told Canadian HR Reporter. “The obvious danger is that if they leave, your revenue falls off a cliff,” Moore added. “It can cause real problems for the future and stability of the organization.”

The �� International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC), part of the Sustainable Growth Initiative, successfully concluded its 9th edition in November, reaffirming its position as a leading experiential learning initiative at Desautels. This year’s challenge—mobilizing financial capital to reverse nature loss—drew 83 university teams from more than 15 countries, supported by 15+ corporate partners and evaluated by 30+ judges who joined the semi-finals and finals on campus.

It’s a tough job market for recent graduates, but a �� education gives students an edge. “My time at �� was foundation for getting the job I have today,” says Andrei Adam (BCom’24) a consultant with McKinsey & Company in Toronto. At Desautels, students have unlimited access to coaches and career support through the Soutar Career Centre. Adam relied on these career coaching services when he was a student, seeking guidance on potential employers and feedback on his resume. He landed an internship with McKinsey as a second-year student, and got a job offer in his third year.
