 Sumatra\, he graduated from the\nFaculty of Tarbiyah (Islamic Education)\,
  IAIN (State Institute for\nIslamic Studies) Jakarta (1982). In 1986 he wo
 n a Fullbright\nScholarship to pursue his advanced studies at Columbia Uni
 versity\,\nNew York City and got his MA (1988) from the Department of Midd
 le\nEastern Languages and Cultures. Winning Columbia President\nFellowship
 \, he moved to Department of History\, Columbia University\,\nwhere he got
  another MA (1989)\, MPhil (1990)\, and PhD (1992) with\ndissertation on “
 The Transmission of Islamic Reformism\nto Indonesia: Networks of Middle Ea
 stern and Malay-Indonesian\n`Ulama in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth\nCent
 uries”.  He was elected as Rector of\nIAIN/UIN Jakarta in October 1998\; a
 nd was reelected in August 2002\nfor the second term.  His book Renaisans 
 Islam di Asia\nTenggara (Renaissance of Islam in Southeast Asia) won the\n
 national award as the best book of the year 1999 in the field of\nhumaniti
 es and social sciences.\n
