Please join us at noon on\nNovembe r 10th as Aparna Nadig\, (Ph.D) School of Communication\nSciences and Diso rders\, º£½ÇÉçÇø\, presents\n'Interpersonal communication in high -functioning autism:\nLooking beyond group differences.'\nAbstract:\nIn th is talk I describe a set of studies on communication in\nschool-age childr en with high-functioning autism that focus on\nindividual differences with in this group and the factors that\nunderlie them. The first study examine d how participants describe\nobjects to a conversational partner in three situations with\nincreasingly complex audience design demands. Rather than a general\nattenuation in adapted descriptions\, HFA participants demonst rated\ndistinct adaptation profiles where more complex aspects of audience \ndesign were demonstrated sequentially. Higher structural language\nabili ty\, rather than symptom severity or social skills\,\ndifferentiated HFA p articipants with typical adaptation profiles\nfrom those who displayed dec reased audience design.\nThe second set of studies examined face-to-face c onversation in\nthe same sample. A quantitative analysis was carried out o n both\nverbal exchange and gaze data. In addition a novel question was\ne xamined: How does speaking about a circumscribed interest affect\nreciproc ity of verbal exchange and eye gaze\, relative to a generic\ntopic? Speaki ng about a topic of interest may improve reciprocity\nby increasing partic ipants' motivation. Alternatively\, it could\nengender more one-sided inte raction\, given the engrossing nature of\ncircumscribed interests. In thei r verbal exchanges HFA participants\ndemonstrated decreased reciprocity du ring the interest topic.\nMoreover\, stereotyped behaviour and restricted interest symptoms\nwere inversely related to reciprocal verbal exchange. H owever\, both\nthe HFA and comparison groups looked significantly more to their\npartner's face during the interest than generic topic. The results \nacross modalities suggest that circumscribed interests led HFA\nparticip ants to be less adaptive to their partner verbally\, but\nspeaking about t hese highly practiced topics also allowed for\nincreased gaze to the partn er.\n \n \n \n DTSTART:20101110T170000Z DTEND:20101110T180000Z LOCATION:Rabinovitch House\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 2A8\, 3640 rue de la Montagne SUMMARY:Language Lunch: Dr. Aparna Nadig URL:/channels/event/language-lunch-dr-aparna-nadig-168 256 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
