George Thanassoulis
Dr. George Thanassoulis is the Director of Preventive and Genomic Cardiology at the MUHC and a Professor of Medicine at 海角社区. He completed his MD at the University of Toronto, his internal medicine and cardiology training at the University of Toronto and 海角社区, and an MSc in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at 海角社区. He subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in echocardiography at the Jewish General Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship in Genomic and Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the NIH's Framingham Heart Study.
His major clinical interests are in cardiovascular prevention, including leading the MUHC Family Heart Clinic for patients with premature coronary artery disease and their families.
His research focuses on the genomics of aortic valve stenosis. He co-led an international consortium that completed the first genome-wide association study for aortic valve disease, identifying lipoprotein(a) as one of the first causal factors in its development. He is principal investigator of the CIHR-funded EAVaLL trial, which is testing whether pharmacological lowering of Lp(a) can reduce the progression of valve disease in genetically predisposed individuals.
