The Adoption and Usage of AI Agents: Early Evidence from Perplexity

Abstract:

I will trace the evolution of frontier AI products鈥攆rom early chatbots, to chatbots augmented with plugins that enable external interactions such as web search and code execution, to specialized agents designed for deep research, coding, and browser-based tasks, and finally to general computer-use agents capable of performing the full range of digital work. I will then discuss 12 patterns identified across 3 descriptive studies on how people use AI agents via Perplexity Comet (a browser agent) and Perplexity Computer (a computer-use agent), focusing on who uses them, how intensively, for what purposes, and with what downstream effects on productivity.
