Published: 7 April 2026

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently聽advised business leaders to聽look beyond the resume of job seekers, and trust in their interaction with candidates. But trusting your gut聽isn鈥檛聽a good way聽to build the best team, according to Lisa Cohen, Associate Professor at 海角社区 Desautels.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to end up with a bunch of people who are good talkers,鈥 Cohen told HR Reporter. 鈥淏ut that聽doesn鈥檛聽mean they will be good employees. It means they are very articulate, and if聽it鈥檚聽a sales job,聽maybe聽that鈥檚聽appropriate. But not every job requires that.鈥 When you take this approach, managers might select people who agree with them politically or like the same sports team. 鈥淏ut none of that is really relevant to the job.鈥
