鈥淒rawing on material from my recent book,聽Networks of Trust, I argue that colleges and聽
universities impose hidden social costs on some of their students through the very聽
process of educating them. I focus on the role education plays in shaping the set of聽
sources of information that students trust (their 鈥渋nformational trust networks鈥) and the聽
grounds they have for deciding what kinds of sources to trust (their 鈥渋nformational聽
ideology鈥). While one effect of this process is to improve students鈥 capacities for聽
knowledge, it nevertheless pulls some students away from the communities in which聽
they grew up, communities who occupy and are held together by different trust聽
networks. Political criticisms of higher education from both the left and the right can be聽
understood, then, as giving expression to the anxieties this process provokes.鈥澛
