Remembering the past, celebrating diverse Black cultures, and shaping a more equitable future are at the heart of this month’s Black History Month (BHM) events in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS).

This year, a growing number of student associations hosted activities ranging from research discussions and conferences to art exhibitions and dance workshops.

You’ve been in this role for about a year now – how has it been going?

I’m grateful that colleagues and learners have taken the time to bring me up to speed on what they’re working on and what’s important to them. That to me is the most energizing part of the entire dossier. There’s so much amazing work being done in both education and community engagement, both by individuals and by units and departments. The enthusiasm for doing this work to better serve our learners, our staff, our faculty and the communities in Quebec is really inspiring.

Physiotherapy Considerations for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Special Needs is a one-day workshop within the Integrated Clinical Exercise Rehabilitation course of the �� Physiotherapy program.

Now in its eighth year, this interactive workshop brings �� physiotherapy students together with athletes from Special Olympics Québec for an engaging learning experience enjoyed by all.

On October 10, second-year medical students received their white coats from their Osler fellows as part of ��’s “Donning the Healer’s Habit” ceremony that marks the transition to clinical training. Over 1,000 participants, including more than 250 students from the Montreal campus and Campus Outaouais, as well as their families, friends and Osler fellows, gathered to celebrate this milestone.

Two �� medical students, Madeline Yaaka and Craig Sky, have been jointly recognized with the Elaine Kilabuk Award. This award honours the legacy of Elaine Kilabuk, MDCM, a Nunavut Inuk graduate of ��’s medical school, who has dedicated her career to advancing Northern and Indigenous health. The award is intended to support the training of Inuit or Indigenous medical students and to inspire future generations of physicians to serve their communities and beyond. Yaaka is the first Inuk recipient of the award, which was inaugurated in 2019.
