 ding a general method to solve all such curves remains a significant chall
 enge\, one can instead ask what happens on average. This talk will introdu
 ce the arithmetic of elliptic curves and discuss how a statistical viewpoi
 nt leads to new results and conjectures regarding the distribution of thei
