2025-2026 Schulich Competition Round-Up

Each year the Schulich School of Music holds several solo and chamber competitions, open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

These competitions offer students opportunities to showcase their grit, dedication, discipline, and musicianship, while preparing them for the competitive professional world. Competitions also give us a chance to celebrate our students—every year, without fail, we are blown away by the participants’ performances.


To mark the end of the 2025-2026 competition season, here is a summary of all our winners:

Classical Concerto Competition

November 2025

Violinist Tsubasa Muramatsu (MMus.) and violist Nathan Emans (MMus.), were also the joint winners of the 2025-2026 Classical Concerto Competition with their performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. The duo performed the concerto with the º£½ÇÉçÇø Symphony Orchestra at Salle Pierre-Mercure in February 2026—you can . This concert was truly a celebration of the hard work and dedication of our students, as it also featured Peter Zhou (BMus.), winner of the 2024-2025 º£½ÇÉçÇø Concerto Competition, performing Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.1 in D-flat major, Op.10, and the premiere of a new work by Jonas Regnier (Ph.D., MMus. ’21), winner of the 2023-2024 Andrew Svoboda Composition Prize.

Chamber Music Competition 

December 2025 

°Õ³ó±ðÌýOsmium Quartet, with violinists Tsubasa MuramatsuÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýSieun Layla ParkÌý(µþ²Ñ³Ü²õ.),Ìý±¹¾±´Ç±ô¾±²õ³ÙÌý±·²¹³Ù³ó²¹²ÔÌý·¡³¾²¹²Ô²õ, and cellist Amos Friesen (GDip.), were the well-deserved winners of the 2025-2026 Chamber Music Competition. The finale at Tanna Schulich Hall was the culmination of two days of competition feature top notch performances from some of the best string, brass, and woodwind groups at º£½ÇÉçÇø. Coached by Prof. André Roy, the Osmium Quarter’s performance of works by Joseph Haydn and Gyorgy Ligeti was a remarkable achievement. 

The quartet have also advanced to the quarter finals of the 2026 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, to be held this May. Break a leg, Osmium!

Golden Violin Award 

December 2025 

Our dedicated stringed instrument competition, the annual Golden Violin Award, was won this year by Joey Machin, violin (BMus.). Following a rigorous selection process and competition, this award is presented to an outstanding string player currently enrolled in the Schulich School of Music. The winner receives a generous scholarship, valued this year at $30,000, as well as a small likeness of the violin in the form of a 14-karat gold lapel pin. In addition, the winner may be invited to play in a recital at º£½ÇÉçÇø or at one of its partner institutions. This competition also awards generous prizes for the two runners up: Joseph Tsao, violin (BMus.), was awarded second place and received $15,000, and François Lamontagne, cello (GDip. ’25), was awarded third place and received $5,000.  

Romantic and Contemporary Concerto Competitions 

February 2026

The Romantic and Contemporary Concerto Competition featured two separate streams this year: one for strings, and one for woodwinds, brass, and percussion. There is always a wide diversity of repertoire in this competition, as participants can choose works dating from the early nineteenth century to the present day, making for a varied concert experience.

°Â±ðÌý³¦´Ç²Ô²µ°ù²¹³Ù³Ü±ô²¹³Ù±ðÌý·É¾±²Ô²Ô±ð°ù²õÌýAmos Freisen, cello (G.Dip.), and Meagan Foster, percussion (MMus.), for their excellent performances! Amos and accompanist Lucas Porter gave a rousing performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, and Meagan, accompanied by Lucas Bell, performed Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto. They will perform their concertos with the º£½ÇÉçÇø Symphony Orchestra in the 2026-2027 season. 

Wirth Vocal Prize 

February 2026

The Wirth Vocal Prize in vocal performance was established in 2015 through the extraordinary generosity of Elizabeth Wirth to the Schulich School of Music of º£½ÇÉçÇø, along with new Student Excellence Awards, and an innovative Student Initiatives Fund. Awarded yearly since its inception, the Wirth Vocal Prize recognizes a voice student who demonstrates exceptional talent and significant promise for an international career. This year we congratulate Zoe McCormick, soprano (A.Dip.), for placing first; she was accompanied by two-time concerto competition winner ´¡±ô±ð³æ±ð²âÌý³§³ó²¹´Ú¾±°ù´Ç±¹Ìý(¶Ù²Ñ³Ü²õ.).Ìý

Not only can you watch , you can hear her live in concert on April 15 at 7:30 pm at Paul Desmarais Theatre as part of our  series. You won’t want to miss it! Until then, you can also learn more about Zoe in this recent  for º£½ÇÉçÇø Giving. 


All performance students at the Schulich School of Music commit to many hours of practice, rehearsal, and training during their degrees, and it is through frequent performances and events like our competitions that they build the experience necessary for launching successful careers. So please join us in congratulating both the winners and all those who participated in the 2025-2026 competition season at Schulich!
