Integrating GenAI into the Language Class: When, Why, and How?

The presentation will provide concrete examples of how to integrate generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into foreign language courses. By examining tasks such as preparing formative exercises, generating complementary audio material, guiding ethical student use, and incorporating GenAI into graded assignments, the speaker will share several didactic practices developed through his own teaching experience in various German as a Foreign Language (GFL) courses.

Gabriel Labrie is a PhD candidate in German Studies at Universit茅 de Montr茅al under the supervision of Manuel Meune, researching multilingualism among young adults in Luxembourg City. He is also a member of the Canada Research Chair in Comparative Linguistic Minorities, held by Jean-R茅mi Carbonneau. As a lecturer, he has taught several undergraduate German courses at Universit茅 de Montr茅al, in which he integrates generative AI to foster digital literacy.  This approach earned him a 2024-2025 Prix d鈥檈xcellence en enseignement from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He recently joined the Groupe de Recherche et d鈥櫭塼ude en Langues et Intelligence Artificielle (GR脡LIA) at Universit茅 de Montr茅al.
