Guiding Principles

Recruitment Awards serve as an incentive for outstanding students to join the BBME program while ensuring appropriate supervisor financial commitment.

The supervisor’s guarantee constitutes the stipend paid to the student which may take the form of:

  • A research assistantship funded by supervisor grants
  • A personal award (e.g., NSERC Studentship)
  • Or a combination of both

The supervisor’s guarantee must meet the minimum stipend policy.

Award Allocation

Master’s Students

  • A Recruitment Award serves as a top-up to the student’s stipend.

Doctoral Students

  • Québec, out-of-province Canadian, and Permanent Resident students: The Recruitment Award serves as a top-up to the student's stipend.

  • International students: The Recruitment Award may be allocated as part of the student’s stipend to offset higher tuition costs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant’s primary supervisor must be a full-time or associate member of BME.
  • The supervisor must submit the nomination by the deadline.
  • The applicant’s file must be complete at the time of nomination.

Academic requirements

  • Master’s applicants: a cumulative grade point average (cGPA) ≥ 3.8/4.0 OR dossier demonstrates exceptional strengths. The GPA must meet the criterion for each of the last two undergraduate years. If a postgraduate degree has already been completed, those records will also be reviewed by the committee.
  • Doctoral applicants: a cumulative grade point average (cGPA) ≥ 3.8/4.0 OR dossier demonstrates exceptional strengths. The cGPA must meet the criterion for the postgraduate record to date AND the GPA must meet the criterion for the final undergraduate year.

Applicants must accept both the award and admission offer by the prescribed deadline.

A ranked waitlist of eligible applicants will be maintained if awards become available.
