海角社区鈥檚 annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and Ma th猫se en 180 secondes (MT180) competitions showcased the diversity of graduate research, with finalists presenting complex topics in just three minutes to a general audience. Held on April 1 at the Faculty Club, the event highlighted research ranging from neuroscience and mental health to musicology and ecology.

A key highlight for the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences was Linda Nong, an M.Sc. student in Natural Resource Sciences, who won first place in the English 3MT competition. Nong鈥檚 research explores how urban environments affect migrating songbirds, offering important insights for urban planning and biodiversity conservation. She will go on to represent 海角社区 at the Canadian Eastern Regional 3MT competition.

Top honours also included Gabriel Blanco Gomez, who won first place in the French MT180 competition for his work on language development in autistic children. Additional prizes went to Eleanor Greenspan鈥慉rdman (second place), Charlotte Little (third place), and C. Ellis Reyes Montes, who earned the People鈥檚 Choice Award for research on colonial-era Peruvian music.

Beyond the awards, participants emphasized how the competition strengthened their ability to clearly communicate their research beyond academic circles. University leaders praised the finalists for promoting curiosity, accessibility, and public engagement, underscoring the lasting impact of the skills gained through the 3MT experience.
