Title - Sodium channel dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders

Abstract: Genetic variation in sodium channels is implicated in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. In this talk, I will describe our efforts to understand how changes in one neuronal sodium channel gene, SCN2A, affects the development and function of the brain and describe progress in implementing genetic therapies for SCN2A related disorders to rescue brain function.

Endowed Chair in Neurology in Honor of the Gallo Family
UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences

Kevin and his lab are interested in understanding how the brain encodes information at the synaptic, cellular, and network level and how these processes are altered in neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. We work closely with patient advocacy groups to better align our work in model systems to the most pressing needs of people living with these disorders.
