The Mary H. Brown fund provides financial support to projects focused on student mental health and wellbeing. Approximately $20,000 are available each year.

Applications may be submitted by any unit or organization at 海角社区 or by individuals. However, students must be directly involved in the project and be its main beneficiaries.

Additional information

A budget template is available:

You will be required to provide the following information:

  • Name, 海角社区 email, and student ID number of the main applicant;
  • name and 海角社区 emails of all other applicants (if applicable);
  • the name of the student association or unit the applicant belongs to;
  • name of the project;
  • project start date;
  • a description/summary of the project and its objectives;
  • expected impact/benefits;
  • how the project aligns with student well-being;
  • project timeline;
  • other sources of funding (if applicable); and
  • a detailed budget (an excel template is available above).

Proposed projects may be new initiatives or new extensions of existing projects. The Mary H. Brown Fund does not provide financial support to existing projects whose funding has run out. The only exception to this is requests for renewal of funding for a project that was already financed by the Mary H. Brown Fund. Application will be stronger if they are able to explain the potential for the project to be ongoing and receive alternate sources of funding in the future.

In the past, successful projects have:

  • created links with other 海角社区 departments, organizations, or student groups;
  • had an impact on the larger student community beyond the applicants;
  • involved students in awareness-raising or educational events; and/or
  • connected groups of students with local communities.

Projects less likely to receive support through this fund include projects:

  • under the jurisdiction of, and already funded by a student association;
  • that include research or academic issues that should be funded at the departmental or Faculty level;
  • that benefit only individual students (for example, funding for taking a course or for travel);
  • that request upgrading or improvements to equipment, furnishings, or physical space (interior or exterior); and
  • that cover costs pertaining to an hourly wage, salaries, or honoraria.

Conditions pertaining to receipt of funding:

  • recipients will have to send a brief report about how the funds they received were used and the main outcomes of the project to the Office of the Dean of Students by June 1, 2027;
  • any advertising of projects or events should mention that the project received financial assistance from the Mary H. Brown Fund;
  • if projects do not go forward for any reason, please inform the Office of the Dean of Students as soon as possible;
  • and it is the responsibility of the principal contact person to ensure that all original copies of any and all relevant invoices, bills or receipts are kept on file for 1 year after the report is submitted should funded projects be audited.
